From Runaway to Homecoming: Queer Literature in Taiwan

The conflict and search for identity within queer experiences often lead to rebellion and the desire to escape. Yet through learning love and understanding, many eventually begin the journey home. Kevin Chen, with works like “Ghost Town”(鬼地方) and “The 67th Pangolin”(第六十七隻穿山甲), writes with humor and pain about exile and return, establishing himself as a key voice in contemporary Taiwanese queer literature. Chen Xue, from “Enü Shu”(惡女書) to “A Decade of Marriage”(同婚十年), explores love and intimacy among women and queer individuals with delicate precision, making her a longstanding force in gender-focused literature. Representing different generations and perspectives in Taiwan, these two distinct authors will meet in conversation to share how, through literature, they once ran away—and how they found their way home.
