It would be a rough description of a book. Smaller books are the size of a palm, but even the larger ones are typically no larger than the size of an A4 sheet of paper. And designers fiercely battle the tight frame of what a book should look like as they select the optimal font, paper, and binding method. They agonized over the relationship between the text and images, where the page numbers should go, where the ISBN barcode should go, and which post-processing method would be better. These types of generally pointless deliberation on unnoticeable details often end in vain, but they also rarely result in a prominent victory. The 30 books featured in this exhibition are some of the victorious results.
We wanted them to resemble the huge billboards often seen on the walls of subway aisles and bus stops. The books, enlarged to surpass the height of an adult person, present themselves not as mere vessels of content but as independent objects. They are also stripped of the weight of CMYK ink to approach us through light as familiar RGB images. And in the process, they come across as something simultaneously familiar and foreign.
