Why Korean Sci-fi Now?

Science fiction, ranging from literary classics like Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Seas, 1984, and Brave New World to movies such as the Star Wars and Star Trek mediafranchises, is part of pop culture. In Korea, sci-fi novels have rapidly gained popularity since the 2019 release of Kim Cho-yeop’s If We Can’t Move at the Speed of Light. But what is drawing Korea to sci-fi and why now? This session tries to answer these and other questions about the genre.
